Do you spin?
It’s a question I’ve been asked many times since the spin class phenomenon started gaining traction years ago. Well, now I can say ‘I do’ having worked my quads at a recent class at Vicious Cycle – one of the hippest places to burn those pesky calories thanks to their interval training spinning sessions inside a funky Sydney studio.
Down an alleyway off beach-bound Curlewis Street in Bondi Beach, Vicious Cycle is the brainchild of former fashion buyer Tanya Weeks and Sydney’s first dedicated Cycle studio.
After moving to Sydney from Melbourne five years ago, Tanya swapped her high-flying role in the fashion industry to self-fund her idea of the ideal cycle-savvy gym.
‘It’s been challenging, the hardest thing I’ve done in my life,’ she says, before adding, ‘I’d do it all over again if I had the chance.’
Avoiding checking out the competition so she can focus on her own project, Tanya’s success has come from sheer determination and vision. Now a popular destination for eastern beaches spin fanatics, Vicious Cycle is so on the map that Hollywood celebs, like Emily Blunt, stop by when they’re in town.
Tanya also offers outdoor cycle classes, having set up at the Opera House and Bondi Beach, and when we met she was about to take 21 clients to Bali for a cycle & yoga retreat and to feed her raw food passion – Tanya tells me there’s a raw food movement in Ubud, worth checking out.
I took on the Vicious 80s class and rode the studio’s Classic Supreme Body Bikes (the Rolls Royce of spinning cycles) to tunes like Caribbean Queen and Ride Like the Wind (of course) with Tanya challenging and encouraging the class for the very breathless, sweaty but fun 45 minutes.
Next time you’re in Bondi be sure to check out the fluoro bikes and graffiti wall that make Vicious Cycle stand out from the rest. And with plans to expand to Queensland and Bali and an apparel line in the works, Tanya’s move from fashion to fitness was right on.
Drop classes are $18 with an introductory offer of 2 classes for 20 bucks (bargain!) available for new clients.
