Get the Vie Active life!

Noa Ries (co-founder of Vie Active) has been into health and fitness for as long as she can remember, training for the City 2 Surf with her dad when she was just eight, and running laps of soft sand along Bondi Beach. But it was in her early 20s that Noa became committed to health and fitness, or as she puts it, “I swapped my party heels for sneakers.”

Noa was soon training for triathlons and completed a half ironman before becoming a qualified personal trainer.

“Exercise just makes me feel better and it gives me the energy to get through the day. I know on the days that I don’t exercise I feel really sluggish and don’t have much focus. I’m really passionate about living an active life because if I didn’t I wouldn’t have vitality and energy.”

Growing up in Australia’s iconic Bondi Beach, it’s not hard to see where Noa got her inspiration from to launch high-end workout wear label, Vie Active.

“Something I love about Bondi is that whenever anyone from overseas visits us they’re always struck by how fit and healthy everyone is. Any day of the week there are people working on their fitness. It’s an incredibly passionate community of health and wellness. You can go for an amazing run along the coastline, swim laps at Icebergs or surf the ocean.”

Noa, a mum of two, remembers the day she was inspired to create Vie Active. “It was an epiphany – I found myself still wearing my workout clothes at four in the afternoon and I hadn’t had time for a shower that day and I felt really revolting. I thought, there’s got to be a way I can do an intense workout and run throughout my day and not have to make this conscious choice between being fit and being stylish. And also feel as good at the end of the day as I do at the start of the day.”

What followed was a two-year journey of research and development and pushing the envelope in terms of garment technology and fabric and print innovations. “I was really clear that I wanted to fuse fitness and fashion, and function,” says Noa who felt there were a lot of brands that were either really fashionable but not very functional or the other way around. “I wanted to fuse the two and that’s how Vie Active came about.”

Vie Active teamed up with Woolmark, the world’s leading wool textile organisation, to use temperature regulating Merino wool in their garments. Merino fibres don’t react with sweat, keeps you warm in cooler climates and cool in a clammy environment.

“It’s the most amazing fabric,” boasts Noa. “People think it’s strange to work out in wool but I say try it for one workout and you’ll never work out in anything else. I wear merino every day because I have a busy life and don’t have time for five outfit changes. I still feel good, and chic. The fabric works with me instead of against me.”

Vie Active celebrated their first birthday last month and will launch into the US market via their online sales porthole on July 1st.

“It’s been amazing. It’s blown all of us away how positively people have responded to it and I think part of that is the authenticity. I had a vision to create a brand that spoke to women, it was less about ‘here’s the latest tights and jacket’, it was more about, ‘here’s the latest green smoothie, here are the benefits of a Barre workout, here’s five exercises to do while you’re travelling’. And to really communicate the latest trends and inspirations in wellness.”

The result is a community of Vie activists around the world! “Enabling women to live an active life without having to make a decision between being fit or stylish is really empowering and the easier we can make it for women to live an active life, the better.”

“It’s an amazing thing to be able to celebrate having an active life!”

I trialled Vie Active wear for myself when Noa put me through the Bondi Body Workout moves she designed to give us girls a toned and terrific bikini body. Not only comfortable and sweat repellant, the designs and prints are definitely something I felt good wearing from workout to doing the daily run around in.

Noa and I worked out at the Xtend Barre studio in Brooklyn Heights where they offer Pilates and dance amplified classes for beginners, advanced and mums with bubs. Check out their new client special – three classes for $49!

“The Bondi body to me is toned and fit, tight bottoms, trim thighs, toned arms and flat abs. Nothing’s better than Xtend Barre for all of those!”

BONDI BODY WORKOUT

Complete circuit 3 – 5 times.

-Plié squat – 20 reps

With one arm out level with your shoulder and the other hand on your hip, squat repetitively, keeping knees in line with ankles.

Plie squat is a signature move of Xtend Barre, it’s great for toning the bottom, inner thighs and by holding your arm out you’re working on those small inner muscles.

IMG_1598 IMG_1607

-Tendu lift – 20 reps

Rest hands on bar or wall, softly bend inside leg and tilt and bend outside leg to a diagonal position as if you were swinging your leg over a bike.

Ideal for toning the side of bottom.

IMG_1668 IMG_1669 IMG_1670IMG_1613

-Hip raises with tricep dips – 20 reps

With arms behind you, lift hips up into the air and raise one leg and lower down, alternate legs while dipping arms down from behind.

Hits the area where the hamstring meets bottom – where bottom smiles 🙂

And helps the butt to lift.

IMG_1673 IMG_1674 IMG_1675

-Side planks with rotation – 20 reps

Start in plank position, roll hips over from one side to the other (meeting at plank in the middle) and make sure hips touch the floor on each side.

A signature move for chiseling the side of the abs.

IMG_1628  IMG_1630 IMG_1631

-Russian twists – 20 reps

Sitting up with legs in a table top position, twist from side-to-side with a medicine ball or similar

Attacks the deep abdominal muscles and obliques.

IMG_1640 IMG_1641

-Leg flutters – 20 reps

Lie flat, with arms behind head and slowly raise legs up and down in a scissor repetition

You’ll feel this one in the lower abdominal muscles

Vie Active offers high-performance garments for the fitness obsessed, is tried and tested on the shores of Australia’s famous Bondi Beach, and is now available in the US!

Husband and wife team Bryan and Noa Ries have long lived an active life as athletes and are dedicated to a healthy lifestyle. As a personal trainer and a mother of two, Noa, like many of us, often found herself still running around in her workout gear at 4pm. ‘I wanted to be wearing something better than lycra,’ she says. ‘Something that would let me feel fashionable and chic, but still handle the intensity of a tough workout.’

And viola, Vie Active, which uses Merino wool in its garments, was born! Merino wool is a fibre that keeps you cool and sweat-free (thanks to breathability and quick-dry fibres) when working out, and warmer in cooler climates thanks to its temperature regulating ability.

Tune into my new site Health Bird (live next week!) to work out with Noa and I as she takes me through the Bondi Body Workout.

Visit Vie Active to shop online (in Australia and the US)

Australian designers, celebrity fashion, organic fabric, organic fashion, sustainable fashion, Tluxe

Style seamlessly meets organic lifestyle with Australian-born brand Tluxe.

Want to furnish your wardrobe guilt-free? Then look no further than the environmentally-friendly yet luxurious and comfortable collection from Tluxe. Garments are handcrafted by highly skilled artisans in Australia, using the finest organic and sustainable yarns including bamboo, cotton, cashmere, silk and Merino wool. All materials are ethically sourced from Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Japan and Turkey, resulting in thoughtful pieces to run wild in.

Tluxe was founded by English-born, Sydney-based designer Rebecca Powell in 2006, after a career working for Selfridges, Top Shop and Stirling Cooper in the United Kingdom as well as world-famous Aussie brands Bonds and Mambo. Rebecca soon recognised a gap in the local market for Australian designed and made luxury basics and created a label whose name is inspired by the fusion of fashion staple words ‘deluxe’ and ‘Tee’. Genius, huh!

The Autumn/Winter 2014 collection ‘Symphonic Seasons’ introduces functional and stylish layering pieces in a neutral palette. Pieces not only feel divine to wear but you know you’re adhering to the Tluxe philosphy and sustaining the environment with every step you take in a Tluxe piece.

No wonder the label has a loyal celebrity fan base including Miranda Kerr, Jennifer Hawkins and Jessica Mauboy.

Eco Chic eyewear and watches

eco fashion, Matteo Charles, performance art, sunglasses, sustainable, Watches, wooden fashion

Rad eco brands Proof Eyewear and WeWood Watches are two labels you need to get your hands on.

Made from 100% sustainable materials, Proof eyewear and lenses are hand-crafted, customizable using various different types of wood and for every pair sold, part of the profit goes to sight-giving surgeries in India. Proof is the brainchild of three brothers who grew up in the wood industry. The brand was born from that and their love of travelling, freedom and nature and it shows in their product.

WeWood watches are completely free from toxic materials and won’t weigh you down like metals can. What could be better than telling the time in a kind and natural way? And, WeWood gives back by planting a tree for every timepiece sold.

And now, proving themselves even cooler, they’ve partnered with live performance artist Matteo Charles who’ll be seen painting his canvasses around Australia.

Check out Matteo creating for Proof and WeWood here. It’s exciting stuff to see such a talent in real time.

‘We instantly felt drawn to Matteo’s work as he captivates his audience by sharing his vision through such fluid movement. We love collaborating with like-minded, talented creatives,’ says Jon Hill, Branched Director.

She’s got LEGS

celebrity legs, denim shirt, jennifer hawkins, Legs, nikki phillips, Perfect pins, Sexy Legs, Shaving, summer dress, toned legs, Venus Olay, work out

It’s official, Jennifer Hawkins has the best legs strutting around our fine land!

529229-79514c64-5e6e-11e3-8eb9-1c57f26bd260

Venus & Olay commissioned a survey (to celebrate the launch of the Venus & Olay SugarBerry razor) amongst Australians and they voted Hawko in ahead of Megan Gale and Miranda Kerr as having perfect pins. And it’s hard to disagree!

original_CW

Topping the international celebs was Cameron Diaz with Jennifer Aniston and Beyonce coming in a close second.

Coogeecat spoke to fashion personality and style blogger Nikki Phillips – who has killer sexy legs herself – about what makes the perfect set of pins.

Nikki Phillips

What makes the perfect pair of legs?

Having irresistibly smooth silky legs is definitely what makes a woman’s legs more attractive along with regular exercise to keep pins in top condition. Sexy legs have a good overall shape to them from top to bottom. They are toned, smooth and tanned.

Why does Jennifer Hawkins have the perfect set of pins?

The combination of a toned shape, an even, natural tan and smooth, silky legs helped Jen achieve the title of Australia’s most perfect pins.

How do you make sure your legs are ready for summer?

The first step would be to make sure you are using a really good razor like the Venus & Olay SugarBerry. I start at the ankles and shave up the leg using short strokes shaving against the grain with a little pressure for an ‘ouch-free’ smooth shave. I also maintain a regular exercise routine to keep them toned.

What’s the perfect pose to make sure legs look their best in photos?

If you are taking a beach ‘selfie’, make sure you aim the camera so that the edge of the frame should land somewhere on your thighs, fairly close to your hips. This angle makes your legs look as long as possible. If a friend is taking the shot, a side on profile whilst lazing on the sand is always the most flattering – and always ensure your legs are silky smooth.

How else do you look after yourself – what is your diet like?

I’m a vegetarian, so my diet consists of lots of vege, fruit and greens. Since turning vegetarian four years ago, I’ve got more energy and feel great!

Can you share a favourite juice or smoothie recipe?

I don’t usually refer to a recipe but rather buy ingredients that are seasonal and fresh. At the moment I love making green smoothies with key ingredients such as coconut juice, avocado, kale, honey and the occasional addition of spirulina or chia seeds.

What are your beach-bag must haves?

My beach must haves are a large beach towel, sunblock, hat, Sparkling water, waterproof phone case and sunglasses. It also normally has a few tennis balls in it, as I loving hitting the beach with my dog, Tygalilly.

How do you stay fit and healthy over the holiday season?

Remaining hydrated and drinking lots of water is vital over the holiday season and it also does wonders for your skin. Another great tip to stay motivated is to take your workout into the great outdoors to enjoy the warmer weather – whether for yoga or strength training.

What’s your weekly fitness routine?

I’ve always been an outdoorsy girl – I love going for long walks, runs and work out at the park regularly. I also work out twice a week with personal trainers at Savage Training doing cross fit and targeting more cardio and a high intensity workout

What music do you like to work out to?

I have been listening to Pharrell Williams, Flume and Kanye West.

What are the best exercises for lean legs?

My top exercise to achieve toned pins would be to focus on lunges and LOTS of squats with dumbbells. Also as painful as it is, stair running is great for overall definition and it is a great cardio workout at the same time.

Have you discovered any new workouts to share?

I like to mix things up with my exercise regimes so I am always challenging my body. I love TRX Suspension Training which I’ve been doing for about three years. It is a total body workout that uses your own bodyweight and gravity to perform hundreds of exercises. It lets you control how much you want to challenge yourself on each exercise – because you can simply adjust your body position to add or decrease resistance.

What pieces should we update our wardrobe with this summer to ensure we show off our legs to their best?

For the beach a one-piece swimsuit is great to show off your curves and neon pair of sandals for a pop of colour. I’m all about high waisted shorts and baggy shirts and when on holiday it’s a must to always pack a little dress as you never know what a night may lead too. Style the dress with a denim shirt around the waist and some casual sandals or pop on a wedge and show off those silky smooth legs.

Just last week the Spring/Summer 2014 Seafolly campaign was shot on the iconic Bondi Beach with gorgeous French-American bombshell, Camille Rowe.

If she looks familiar, that’s because she appears alongside Twilight hero Robert Pattinson in the Dior Homme campaign. The Paris-born model has also appeared in Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire and RUSSH and has been shot by big name photographers including the provocative Terry Richardson and all-American Bruce Webber.

There’s no denying this girl is a total babe, her bf, MGMT founder Andrew VanWyngarden certainly thinks so! (ps. MGMT tour Australia in January.

Aussie resort brand Seafolly is now an international player thanks to their reliable swimwear designs and pretty prints. And of course those hot campaigns with Jessica Hart, Miranda Kerr and Catherine McNeil, and now Camille. Not only is Seafolly available in Australia but they’re stocked in famous retailers including Selfridges, ASOS and Harrods.

Coogeecat was lucky enough to have a chat with bronzed and relaxed Camille and run alongside these gorgeous behind-the-scenes images from the campaign shoot. Ah, beach body envy!
