baby clothes, chemical free, cotton, organic baby clothes, organic crops, organic textiles

Newborns are so precious, that soft, cottonwool skin, all talc-scented and silky smooth. They’re so delicate and delicious there’s no doubt they deserve to be cradled in fabrics that have been harvested from chemically-free crops.

Unfortunately, cotton production represents 3% of our planet’s agriculture, yet as cotton textiles pass through their many processes from soil to customer the use of chemicals represents up to 16% of all insecticides produced worldwide – more than any other crop.

2007-08-04Cotton

Wow, that’s really something to think about – especially as even after many washes some of these chemicals are still present in textiles.

Ecocotton is unique in that it offers products that are crafted from naturally-derived, raw materials including 100% Aegean cotton which is certified by Global Organic Textile Standards. What a relief to know you’re wrapping your newborn or toddler in a baby range that is crafted from cotton that is free from harmful chemical fertilisers, pesticides, or genetically modified seeds (comprised of 40% fiber and 60% seed).

BEAR - Embroidered Baby Set $79.50

The gorgeous pieces are designed in gender neutral tones and highlighted with prints and embroidery.

In addition to their baby range, Ecocotton offers a home range featuring heavenly bed linen, plush towels, cosy robes and accessories. I’m a huge fan of the Marine collection…

NADIDE - Ladie's and Men's Bathrobe $159.5096-2

If you want to know more about just what’s lurking in your favourite cotton t-shirt, read this article from Natural News.

Bravo to Australian cotton growers who have reduced their chemical use by over 90% in the last decade, with some crops now not being sprayed at all.

The Meat-Free challenge… yes you can!

Americans eat a million chickens per hour! Sounds terrible, right? Well, Australians are fast catching up to them as we are now the third biggest meat eaters in the world…

The average Aussie is gobbling down 111.5 kilos of meat a year. Way above the world average of 41.9 kilos.

So when the second annual Meat Free Week takes place next week (March 24 – 30) the nation is being encouraged to get on board by doing away with all meat – including red meat, fish, seafood, chicken and processed meats like ham and sausages – and to increase a healthier eating regime incorporating greens and grains.

spread_th_word

Meat Free Week campaign aims to get you thinking about how your consumption of meat impacts not only your health, but the environment and animals being farmed.

Founders, Lainie Bracher and Melissa Dixon hope to encourage participants to consider smaller portions of meat for the other 51 weeks of the year and to buy sustainably and ethically produced meat, fish and poultry.

Consider this – eating too much meat contributes to Type 2 diabetes, bowel cancer, heart disease, obesity, high cholesterol and a reduced life expectancy.

The benefits of a meatless diet include: reversal of heart disease, losing 10% of your body weight, cancer risk is reduced by up to 40%, lower blood pressure, lowers your risk of Alzheimer’s, improves or reverses diabetes.

There are three charities you can choose to fundraise for; Voiceless, Australian Conservation Foundation, and Bowel Cancer Australia.

And if you’re already vegan or vegetarian there are still plenty of ways to get involved.

Here’s a meat-free recipe from celeb chef Bill Granger to get you started… Remember, what you eat is the foundation of your future.

BAKED EGGPLANT, CHICKPEAS & GREEN CHILLI

3 eggplants, cut lengthways into 1cm-thick slices
4 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, finely chopped
3 garlic cloves, crushed
1 tablespoon grated ginger
1 green chilli, finely diced
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon ground cumin
400g tin diced tomatoes
400g tin chickpeas, drained and rinsed
2 tablespoons pomegranate molasses (or 1 tablespoon brown sugar mixed with 1 tablespoon lemon juice)
1 tablespoon chopped flat-leaf parsley
1 tablespoon chopped mint leaves
2 tablespoons pomegranate seeds

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Sprinkle the eggplant slices with salt, place in a colander and leave for 20 minutes. Rinse well and pat dry with paper towel.

Place two large frying pans over medium–high heat. Lightly brush both sides of the eggplant slices with olive oil. Add a single layer to each pan and fry for 4–6 minutes on both sides, until well browned. Set aside and repeat with the remaining slices. Place half the eggplant slices in a medium casserole dish.

Return a frying pan to the heat with 1 tablespoon olive oil. Add the onion, garlic, ginger, chilli, paprika and cumin, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion is translucent. Add the tomatoes, chickpeas and pomegranate molasses. Mix together and season well with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Pour half the tomato mixture over the eggplant slices in the casserole dish, cover with the remaining eggplant and then pour over the remaining tomato. Transfer to the oven and bake for 15 minutes.

Serve in the dish or allow to rest and serve warm or at room temperature dressed with parsley and mint, pomegranate seeds and sea salt.

Serves 4–6

I love an early morning yoga session, so when five:am organic yoghurt invited me down to the newly refurbished North Bondi Surf Lifesaving Club to stretch and bend with the girls from Yoga 213, I couldn’t resist.

The added bonus was that afterwards, over a delicious brekky, we got to meet the five:am organics founder, David Prior as well as the five:am ambassadors, pro surfer Laura Enever, actress Jessica Tovey and wellness guru and founder of The Holistic Ingredient Amy Crawford.

After breaking a sweat in my first ever hip hop yoga class (you gotta try it!) smoothies, fruit salad, muesli, and delicious treats such as very berry chocolate chia mousse and avocado lemon cheesecake – recipes from Amy Crawford using five:am yoghurt – were served up while David talked about his path to entrepreneurship.

Wanting to do something with a purpose, and realising that organic products were being misrepresented in the Australian market place, the idea for five:am was born. A keen yogi, surfer and meditator, David likes to get the best out of his day and rises at, you guessed it, 5 am. So with a name and the backing of Woolworths supermarkets, David embarked on a journey that saw five:am launch in 2011.

‘There’s still opportunity for anyone passionate about food and wellbeing to get into that space,’ says David of launching a new product onto the market. ‘Making a profitable, successful business that has a purpose and is something you love is a real buzz,’ he says referring to his product which is pesticide, chemical and antibiotic free.

Skilled Aussie surfer and model Laura Enever who says she’s ‘blessed with one of the best lifestyles I could ask for’ stars in the new campaign. While actress and keen environmentalist Jess Tovey says, ‘It’s integral that companies create products that are healthy but find ways to give back to the environment.. and that’s the five:am philosophy.

Health coach and founder of the Holistic Ingredient, Amy, talked about the way organic produce prevents extra toxic burden on our bodies and that buying organic and eating organic ‘just makes sense.’

I couldn’t agree more and I can’t get enough of this yoghurt!

Style seamlessly meets organic lifestyle with Australian-born brand Tluxe.

Want to furnish your wardrobe guilt-free? Then look no further than the environmentally-friendly yet luxurious and comfortable collection from Tluxe. Garments are handcrafted by highly skilled artisans in Australia, using the finest organic and sustainable yarns including bamboo, cotton, cashmere, silk and Merino wool. All materials are ethically sourced from Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Japan and Turkey, resulting in thoughtful pieces to run wild in.

Tluxe was founded by English-born, Sydney-based designer Rebecca Powell in 2006, after a career working for Selfridges, Top Shop and Stirling Cooper in the United Kingdom as well as world-famous Aussie brands Bonds and Mambo. Rebecca soon recognised a gap in the local market for Australian designed and made luxury basics and created a label whose name is inspired by the fusion of fashion staple words ‘deluxe’ and ‘Tee’. Genius, huh!

The Autumn/Winter 2014 collection ‘Symphonic Seasons’ introduces functional and stylish layering pieces in a neutral palette. Pieces not only feel divine to wear but you know you’re adhering to the Tluxe philosphy and sustaining the environment with every step you take in a Tluxe piece.

No wonder the label has a loyal celebrity fan base including Miranda Kerr, Jennifer Hawkins and Jessica Mauboy.

Eco Chic eyewear and watches

Rad eco brands Proof Eyewear and WeWood Watches are two labels you need to get your hands on.

Made from 100% sustainable materials, Proof eyewear and lenses are hand-crafted, customizable using various different types of wood and for every pair sold, part of the profit goes to sight-giving surgeries in India. Proof is the brainchild of three brothers who grew up in the wood industry. The brand was born from that and their love of travelling, freedom and nature and it shows in their product.

WeWood watches are completely free from toxic materials and won’t weigh you down like metals can. What could be better than telling the time in a kind and natural way? And, WeWood gives back by planting a tree for every timepiece sold.

And now, proving themselves even cooler, they’ve partnered with live performance artist Matteo Charles who’ll be seen painting his canvasses around Australia.

Check out Matteo creating for Proof and WeWood here. It’s exciting stuff to see such a talent in real time.

‘We instantly felt drawn to Matteo’s work as he captivates his audience by sharing his vision through such fluid movement. We love collaborating with like-minded, talented creatives,’ says Jon Hill, Branched Director.
